I feel like I've spent the past couple of weeks staring at not so pretty things: appliance spec sheets, closet components, autoCAD drawings and least sexy of all... my undone nails. It's been busy, but fun!

However, I am in serious need of a little dose of romance and glamour. It'll have to come via my pinterest file, since my poor hubby has to work super late--on Valentine's Day! So instead of dolling up and heading out for a romantic dinner, I'll leave you loves with this and go plop on the couch with the babes. In my un-glamorous, cozy jammies.

A REAL Kitchen Table

I've had this in my "tile file" forever (love the dark grout and wood countertops). But this morning I saw something in it I'd never seen before. A perfect solution for a small space kitchen.

If you don't have room for an island plus a breakfast table, why not a classic style kitchen with a large farm table in the center? We never do that anymore. I'd prefer the way this kitchen would "live" to one with a skimpy island and a few barstools. You get fabulous prep space and dining for eight all in one because this stone kills both birds, turkeys or whatever you're cooking. It's the perfect spot to stuff him, dress him, snap peas or shuck corn. And the best part for this lazy cook, you can do so while seated.

I remember my feisty great-grandmother at her center kitchen table, chopping meat for homemade sausage, while us kids sat around her rolling out biscuits. And then of course we'd all assemble for a casual meal in the warmth of that kitchen, eating, laughing and sharing the fruits of our labor. Isn't that cooking is all about?

Workin' It

...or just majorly procrastinating. Once again, I'm feeling overloaded and, as it often does when I'm stressed, my mind is wandering through irrelevant design territory. (Luckily, I don't bill hourly, lest my clients read this in horror). Looking around my office, though, I realize the perfect solution to greater productivity isn't necessarily gettin' down to business. It's a redesigned office space! While some might consider this a "distraction," I consider it a creative warm-up exercise.

So here's what I believe is really impeding me from redrawing my client's lighting plan:

I don't have this full-wall bulletin board to fill with my inspirations! I could break down sections by clients, but let it all bleed together, as it often does anyway. How many times have you had something lying on your desk for one client when you realized it was perfect for another? Or knew you'd pinned or bookmarked something somewhere that would work here or there? This wall is the perfect solution for total access, total recall.

And if my desk looked like this...well, I'd have little or no workspace. But! I'd be so inspired.

Maybe I'd be less distracted if I whipped up some draperies to hid my bookshelves...

Or could always find my scotchtape...

Maybe a little greenery would oxygenate my brain...

I've been meaning to add French wire baskets for fabric samples like the ones in this cozy eclectic space There's even my bit of brass and one of my favorite fabrics on the chair. Must be a sign...

Okay, well, I'm sitting in that chair below; I already have those white boxes; I even have that mac. I guess it's the Carrera countertops that I'm missing in my office!

Ballet in My Inbox

American Ballet Theatre has announced its 2012 season beginning this month in Dallas.

Performances in NYC begin May 14, at The Met.

This has me idly day-dreaming at my desk. I lingered over the ABT season schedule the way I wistfully browse estate home catalogues. How I'd love to secure that NYC pied à terre by May so my friends and I could gather there for dinner and drinks before stepping into the warm Spring night and heading to the ballet. My dream montage looks something like this...

It starts here in my fabulous apartment (I know, it's one of your favorites, too!)....

I'd serve cocktails from this pretty little bar....

then the girls and I would walk back through these doors

(Can't ever get enough of these, can we?)...

to powder our noses and gloss our lips in here...

before heading for the Met to see Swan Lake, wearing a little something

I put together when I should have been reorganizing purchase orders...

Oh, and my daughter, the ballerina, would be dancing the role of Odette.

Hail Caesarstone

As I've said, I think Carrera marble is currently the law here in Los Angeles. But I am forever trying to convince people Caesarstone is the way to go! That's why I was so happy to see their newest products (via Amber's blog) this week. The stuff is virtually indestructable. I once had a rep scribble all over it with a Sharpie, four year-old style, then remove it. Oh wait, that was Corian. Anyway, Caesarstone is still heat, scratch and stain resistant, and five time stronger than granite. Plus they're always coming up with beautiful new products. Gorgeous in the kitchen or the bath! (I'm loving "Ocean Palace" and "Fair Lady.")

Dreaming of a White Kitchen...

I'm dreaming up (another) fresh, white kitchen for a client. It's not that I'm stuck in a 'white' rut. It's more that I'm always indulging my two greatest passions in kitchen design: Clean and Bright.

First, the cleanliness. Not the sexiest passion, but a passion nonetheless. To me white equals clean. White towels, white sheets, white kitchens and baths. Who doesn't want their kitchen to feel spartan clean? At least between meals.

Second, the brightness, or more specifically sunlight! White kitchens reflect more sunlight. My vampire/Norwegian husband says I'd live in a greenhouse if I could. (Who wouldn't?!) So, considering we spend a majority of our family time in the kitchen, you better believe I want great sun exposure and tons of windows. A view of a beautiful garden with a wood or ocean in the background is a big plus, too. (Remember, I'm dreaming, for my clients' sake.)

With the saturation of white, Hamptons Style kitchens, I try to add unique decorative and architectural details to keep each project special. I'm always scanning the market for new fixtures, windows, millwork, etc. Finally, I always add greenery and lots of fabrics to warm things up. Here are just a few images from my files, each with its own bit of inspiration.

This first image inspired a recent project. The ceiling plan was an electrical and architectural nightmare, since they had to work with an existing space. We loved the dark line around the ceiling perimeter. The painters thought my clients were nuts. But the final effect is stellar. So is the entire kitchen.

Take about unusual details. Love this tin coffered ceiling. Who knew metal could feel so warm.

I love the detail of this backsplash. It's a cut slab remnant, installed against simple subway tile.

This is on the top of my wish list for a current project. Those glass cabinets are as close to a greenhouse as you could get. Beautiful! I've worked them in! With all that light you could have a few small potted citrus in there. An orangerie kitchen!

I always love a wall of floor to ceiling lighted cabinets. (I'd add a rolling ladder on an antique brass rail). My client pointed out that things would have to be kept "very organized and pretty up there." But, I pointed out, it's not like you'll be storing Sipee cups and Tupperware up there.

Great fixtures and a cheery color scheme keep this Elizabeth Dinkel kitchen fresh and unique. I think white cabinets and Carrera marble are now officially the law here in Los Angeles.

I lost the source for this house long ago. I just had to show you the picture window, perfect for plants and herbs. I think I'll try to incorporate deep sills in this next project for said purpose. Years ago I ripped an ugly aluminum picture window out of a house in Encino. The owner had kept it filled with plants. But it was so dated. I have to admit, the kitchen lost something when we replaced it with a standard window. I should have replaced it with something like this. There are even better ones on the market now. I would also love to see a lighted lower cabinet on that island. I've seen this done to great effect! Love that clerestory at the dining room passage, too. Okay, and last thing on these images (that I'm not even particularly crazy for): I love the paneling's height and proportion in the dining room. Let's move on.

A Carrera sink (with breakfront)

Double islands used to feel like the spawn of extravagant McMansion kitchens. But I now find them to be one of the most functional layouts for a large family kitchen. I also love the mix of warm wood on the fridge wall with the otherwise all white kitchen.

Turquoise + Tangerine Dream

Yesterday it was announced that Pantone's 2012 Color of the Year would be Tangerine Tango. I just had to repost some of Erin's (House of Turquoise) great shots of the sassy hue. Apparently it's one of her favorite colors. (Of course turquoise, the 2010 Color of the Year, will always be her number one.) Looks like my client isn't alone in her love of this hot color combo.

This room is basically perfection in my mind. Those lacquered walls, the artwork, the velvet on that amazing sofa, the cocktail table with those ikat pillows... But remember (I know I say it over and over): Wall prep and plaster perfection are key before spraying lacquer. Imagine a trace of orange peel under this color. A true tangerine nightmare!

Deco Delight!

Once in a while the universe hands you a golden nugget on a silver platter. By that, I mean this spectacular inspiration photo handed to me by my francophile client. I mean SPECTACULAR! How can I even begin to recreate this periwinkle bedroom fantasy? I literally gasped when I saw it.

Okay, maybe you've seen it, but I hadn't. So, excuse me while I discuss it ad nauseam! Who did it? When? Is that ottoman Ralph? Or a vintage find? I think the mirror is Vaughan. And the fabric? Custom? Sources please...!

It is, in fact, the boudoir of Jeanne Lanvin of the famous House of Lanvin, completed in 1925! I can never emphasize enough that beautiful design is timeless. After researching it a bit further, I found these other images and this fantastic article by Eloise Moorehead:

"Jeanne Lanvin, one of the most illustrious Paris couturières of the twentieth century, hired Armand-Albert Rateau to create an elegant... Art Deco... bedroom suite in her [Paris] townhouse. Lanvin was so delighted by the results that Rateau was commissioned to design her two country homes, her boutiques, her theater and her iconic Arpège perfume bottle, as well as named head of the Lanvin-Décoration department of interior design (established in 1920).

"The dominant motif of the room is the daisy (Lanvin’s daughter was named Marguerite, the French word for daisy). The flower appears throughout the suite, heavily stylized in fabrics, carved in wood and cast in bronze.

What I'm working on...Breakfast Room

Tonight I'm up too late thinking about a breakfast room for one of my clients. One of her inspiration photos is this Tobi Fairley image, which, I agree, is just beautiful. However, it's a bit too traditional for our tastes, or for the rest of the house. Here's what she's really responding to (I broke it down with her):

soft color scheme: aqua with pops of peachy coral
touch of walnut, mixed with painted wood
graphic patterns, mixed with light florals

She wants fun, "updated," and kid friendly. We're already having a round walnut table made for the space. Three active kids will be eating, crafting and spilling at it, so I'm covering all seating in either an ivory faux leather or an aqua "snakeskin" vinyl. (I have some beautiful embossed vinyls that you'd swear were the real thing. And they're totally kid proof!).

I did some very quick mood boards tonight. Hopefully they'll convince her to add some deeper teal to flow with the intensity of the rest of the house.

A slightly refined, yet eclectic version. (Remember the kids can rub cranberries into those chairs.)

Would love to snag something like this artwork for her. I don't care where we put it! Couldn't you just see it over a brass bar from Society Social.

A more casual, global version. I love this chair from Layla Grace. I know, they are getting a bit ubiquitous, but I still love them. Cushions, of course, would be covered in something wipeable.

Okay, just a quick episode of 30Rock with the hubs and a glass of wine, then it's off to bed.

My Christmas Table

Obviously, from last year. (God knows I'm never that ahead of the game). I'm just starting to decorate for this holiday and thought I'd share.

I've done all kinds of "themed" Christmas tables, but I always go back to super classic Christmas decor; poinsettias, plaid and all. It just has that warm, familiar traditional cheer.

I made place cards from white card stock (use ivory if your china is ivory) and marker. I'd considered watercoloring the holly leaves, but since I was days behind with the baking, I went for the quickie magic of layered marker.

These stuffed penguin ornaments were so adorable. I could just see them marching across the kids' table.

So I had my daughter help me glue gun black foam core to the bottoms to make a base.

Voila! Kids' place cards/favor ornaments. Sorry they ravaged the kid table before I could snap photos.

I bought fresh boughs of holly, evergreens and ivy before I had a plan. Here I am the night before the night before Christmas. (I say, last minute pressure is the real mother of invention!) These crystal candelabras were a find years ago. I usually use their bowl shape for groups of pillar candles, but I lined them with moss before plopping in garden soil, poinsettias, ivy and spruce. That floral arrangement lasted for weeks. (Boy, I miss Bombay Company for cheap, classic-looking finds!)

Girl in the Abstract Bed

While sourcing things for a client's modern playroom, I came across the coolest book ever. Originally published in 1954, The Girl in the Abstract Bed was written by Vance Bourjaily and Tobias Scheenbaum. It's a tongue and cheek story of Modernism and the (anti-art) reaction to it, Dadaism. The illustrations are to die for – all in a Cubist style, and tell the story of a little girl whose bed was made for her by her parents' modern artists friends.

who, when she was ten months old,
slept in an abstract bed
designed and decorated for her by a famous artist."

It all plays out with a Reactionary grandmother tearing Nicole away from her modernist Danish tableware and Mother Proust stories. Grandmother then brings the girl into the sunshine where "Dada" and "jane" learn that "our baby is primitive after all!" Hilarious! (in a really art-geeky way.)

The gorgeous Modernist silk-screened illustrations by Tobias Scheenbaum mesmerized me. They would have made Braque, Picasso, or even Beckett smile. Unfortunately, the price of the recent reproductions is steep, and getting steeper. But, Godot willing, they just might end up in my space. ;)

Hello Weekend!

Really looking forward to some downtime this weekend. Besides the kids' games, I have no plans other than to watch those overdue movie rentals (yes, I still physically 'rent' them) and eat eggs benedict with a side of sausage. Maybe I should throw a workout in there.

I'd love to sit around and read the papers in here.

And when my husband offers to take his tired wife out for brunch, I'll be ready in this.

Booked...

That's pretty much how I've been feeling this week. Hence the tardy posts. But today isn't about my schedule. It's about the the joys of reading and displaying books.

There's something very comforting about shelves packed with books. Like a pantry stocked with food, it's a subconscious security blanket against cold nights one might be holed up at home--either by weather or by choice. Today let's focus on a few simple ways to up the chic factor of you bookshelves.

1. Vary heights and directions. One key to a visually interesting bookshelf is variation. Be sure to vary the direction you lay books, the sizes you place together and even the colors (unless you go for something like these images above. Gorgeous!)

Stand back and be sure you have balance, not just on each shelf, but overall. If one cove is crammed with books, the surrounding spaces should be left more open and airy, with a single vase or with larger art books, lying horizontally. Atop this flat stack, prop small paintings or other framed art with tiny easels or plate stands from any craft store. Framed art also works bookcase magic when propped against the back wall of a shelf.

2. Group like colors or items. Groupings always make single items sing. Group similar objects (like bottles, coral, shrunken heads, whatever you've got) and display books by collections. Penguin recently released these redesigned classics; some of the best reads of all time in amazing cloth covers. I've had these beauties bookmarked for months!

Wouldn't these smashing Penguin designs make fabulous gifts for any age or sex? (Holidays are just around the corner!)

3. Consider the way you'll use each book or object. Remember my post about The Un-Staged Home, which addressed keeping it comfortable and functional? Well, it's especially important here, in this room where you'll cozy up to read and relax. When organizing your shelves, keep in mind how you use each object and which books you'll access frequently. Don't set yourself up for a high-maintenance situation or, worse, for an untouchable library. I love this look below for an avid reader's shelves. It feels chic, organized and super easy to maintain.

One (bargain) Fabric--Three Ways

Thought I'd share this great look-for-less find. I found this beautiful (and crazy affordable) blue and white Chinoiserie toile. It's rather "'inspired" by Quadrille's Lyford Pagoda Petite. But I have to say I like it almost as much as the original. I haven't seen it in person but I'm going to take a chance and order some samples. Not exactly a huge risk; it's $19/yard! I was so excited I put together three different mood boards in three different color schemes.

The first is a scheme I've really been missing lately: red, white and blue.

I wanted to avoid the expected, so rather than using a Victorian upholstered headboard, regency fixtures and faux bamboo furniture, I went for a more masculine, clean metropolitan feel. And I kinda like it. Okay, so I threw in an orchid.

Here's a board in my favorite new color crush, blush and navy. (And, yes there's faux bamboo and Regency gold.) It's kept fresh with lots of block-printed fabrics and tropical greenery, balancing the delicate, gilded touches. It has sort of a romantic Indo-Chinois feel. I imagine this is how I'd style the French Indochine set for Marguerite Duras' "The Lover." (If I were the type to sit around and imagine that sort of thing...)

Navy blue with burnt orange, is a classic complimentary scheme. Here's a board for a guest bedroom which incorporates very traditional furnishings with the wit of a Billy Baldwin-esque side chair and a graphic rug. Lots of brass, warm woods and leather, like the Hermès Pippa console (pear wood with brass fittings--stunning!) Feels like a perfect place for tired guests to relax after a long day of riding. Or for your mother-in-law to crash after Thanksgiving dinner.

Emeralds and Black Leather

We've seen so much emerald green this year, and I couldn't be happier. No color is more uplifting or optimistic than this color of renewal, fertility and youth. It's the reason I love visiting Wisconsin in the Spring. The landscape is that intense, lush green of Ireland. (Of course, they've earned it after those winters!) I especially love emerald green with black and gold. Classic, crisp and just plain gorgeous.

I'm happy that it's still going strong on the runway this fall. You know I'm already Fantasy Shopping. Have a look at the things I've found, like this regal Versace military coat (a steal at $4,675) and emerald ring, which I'd pair with leather leggings and Valentino studded booties. (A lady with an edge.) The python clutch with gold coral clasp is the piece de resistance! Forget Missoni for Target. This is what I'm buying this week! In my dreams and on my blog.

Here are some spaces along the same lines. Love the way Europeans mix periods and styles with total nonchalance. Notice the Victorian ceiling above a very modern fixture and furnishings.

What can I say. I can't stop staring at this image above. Timeless. Who can guess what decade this is from? Bet you're wrong. Bet I'm wrong; I don't actually know. There are hints of the last five...and I'm still trying to source that fixture. Anyone?

She's A Lady...

Ever feel like the Universe is trying to tell you something? Last night tweeters were all abuzz about the Jackie Kennedy special, which I recorded to watch with the girls tonight. Then this morning I come upon this beautiful, ladylike vintage pattern (which I will totally knock off), followed by an image in my in-box of this book. Someone is either whispering that I'm a perfect lady or howling that I need to start acting like one. Either way, I'm game.

Green + White Check Please!

It could have something to do with the fact that I spent Saturday afternoon watching my daughter's cheerleading squad in the blistering So Cal heat, the brown hills lying scorched in the background. But, as much as I enjoyed sizzling like a french fry in the stands, I've been seeking cool and fresh ever since. I went home and made watermelon smoothies, jumped in the pool, and almost subconsciously pinned a bunch of fresh rooms. I even revisited a few of my own. They honestly never looked better.

I wish I did this kitchen. Isn't it FABULOUS?

Navy + Pink Master Suite

File under color crush. This combination is tempting me everywhere I turn. I'm dying to do a master suite in navy and pink. I'd even feel satisfied with cobalt and blush. If I can't convice any clients to take it on, this cool color combo just might end up in my own home--like so many of my creative incarnations.

Hopefully, my man doesn't have a problem with a pink master bedroom. I think it's super strong, yet sexy; the perfect combination of yin and yang. And isn't that what the bedroom's all about?

Serious Prep School Style

As leaves burst with fall colors and dormitories all over the country fill with students, I'm once again reminded of aspiring designer Maximilian Sinsteden's digs. He's now well on his way in the world of interior design, in part thanks to this NYTimes article that brought him to my attention.

But I still love to look back at how it all began, here, with his uber preppy dorm room at Drew University. Even the most talented studio art directors could only hope to get "dishelved prep" so right. I think the only other person to take this affectation of young American WASP to such heights of perfection was that Jewish kid from the Bronx, Ralph Lifshitz. Or as we all came to know him, Ralph Lauren.

Note the Bunny Williams book at the far right. I just love that green paint and his artful tie display.

A mix of plaids, paisleys, and persian rugs makes this one very stylish dorm.

White Out

Labor Day is fast approaching and while I welcome the start of the school year with open arms and a big fat kiss, I'm a little less enthusiastic about shelving all my white pants. I absolutely love white pants, almost as much as I love navy (don't even get me started on the two together!). Even though temperatures remain in the high 80s through early fall here, I'm an old-fashioned girl: No phone calls after 9:00 and no white after Labor Day. So, it is with great sadness I say goodbye, until next spring. Cue music...

House of Windsor--Intimate by Design

If you're anywhere near Los Angeles, don't miss House of Windsor. It closes to the public at the end of this weekend! This is by far and away the best showhouse I've ever experienced, on either coast.

I'm sorry you'll all have to wait for the rest of the house photos to be published by Veranda. But here's my favorite.

Generally speaking, I am not the hugest fan of showhouses. They either run tastefully bland or overly dramatic. But this was Design Nirvana. The brainchild of Windsor Smith, the house was constructed from the ground up in one of the most exclusive enclaves in Los Angeles. Smith acted as architect, designer and creative director. It was her concept of a home for the modern family lifestyle (if the family were incredibly cool and had what I estimated to be around $15.2M--no joke). To help realize her vision, Smith hand-picked designers she felt best understood her philosophy. Indeed the house was a collaboration of people with impeccable taste and a serious art and antiques acumen. Every corner of the house was filled, rather curated, with beautiful objets d'art. Yet, it felt more livable and conducive to a happy family life than any residence I've ever encountered.

It was a good traffic day in LA, so my girlfriend and I arrived unexpectedly early for the panel discussion/party. We practically had the place to ourselves. I climbed the stairs above the garage to see the room designed by Martyn Lawrence Bullard. I was greeted by the most exciting space. It was a "den" of sorts, for the man of the house, who Martyn envisions as "modern, hip, sophisticated." (We all design in the mirror don't we?) This man cave, with its funky 70's vibe, spoke to his whole vintage-sexy-rockstar aesthetic.

Just as exciting, was spotting Martyn in the corner. I would have thought I'd play it cool, but no. I literally rushed to him, gushing about how much I love him, his work and the room. Like the consummate professional celebrity, he was ever so gracious and calm. (Who doesn't love their own groupie?) I so appreciated the time he took showing me around the space, pointing out the different pieces, noting the pedigree of each. And we are talking serious pedigree. "There's over a million dollars worth of things in here, Dahling."

The room boasts an array of vintage furniture that would make collectors of any era drool. From the full collection of Damien Hirst skulls, to the rare art photography, to the 70's pop art-inspired fabric from his own line, the room oozed Martyn's special brand of sophistication and sex. There was even a Pierre Cardin chess set, circa 1973, that you know he would expect this hip modern family to use nightly, or at least when the master of the room required company.

It was luxurious yet felt like somewhere you really wanted to hang, not that I felt at liberty to throw myself on the vintage sofas. "Today's luxury is really comfort," he has said. "A modern family wants to be able to sit everywhere, eat everywhere, enjoy everything." While he considers comfort luxurious, he doesn't believe in living with the mundane. "I don't believe in saving the best for Sunday. Enjoy everything you own everyday." I couldn't agree more.

I've already finished her book, Summers in France, which she's signing for me here. Loved it.

I could go on and on about the panel's insights into lifestyle design for today. I enjoyed the very articulate Smith's musings about this idea of creating rooms to purposefully bring families closer together. I love this idea of living authentically, simply, and beautifully in a decompartmentalized, yet intimate home. (This was my personal take-away, anyway; my words, not hers. If only I'd had a transcript of hers!)

But I equally enjoyed their entertaining stories of Smith and Ireland meeting in a Mommy-and-Me! Or the one in which Ireland dragged Smith from an impromtu, wine-filled lunch to a nearly forgotten appointment with her "trainers." When a befuddled Smith, decked in Ireland's too large sneaker and sweats, demanded, "Where are we going?" Ireland cried, "I work out with the Russian Olympic team, Darling. Now hurry up!" Sure enough, the day wound up with the two women doing lunges with, honest to God, a hulking Russian Olympic team.

Kathryn Ireland was more hysterical than Bravo could ever portray. She is the absolute embodiment of the term "joie de vivre," or as my mother likes to call such types (and not with the least bit of affection!), "a real bon vivant." She alone could have held my attention all night speaking about her passion for food, wine and horses. "Before I wanted to sleep with men, I wanted to sleep with horses," she quipped. Some in the crowd stirred uncomfortably until she finished, "Honestly, if I was a really good girl, my mother would let me sleep out in the barn with my pony." No wonder she urged Smith to erect a barn on the horse zoned property, which she transformed into the ultimate equestrian atelier, complete with a farm table, sofas and a bar. Purple lemonade, anyone? Though she's now "on the tequila diet!"

You really have to experience the whole thing to understand why I have had such a hard time editing this (still too long) post. Windsor Smith's kitchen alone could inspire a book. So could genius Peter Dunham's killer room I'd claim for myself. I won't even start on the magical indoor/outdoor flow with lush gardens meant for long afternoons of wine and cheese (did that!).

At one point the very vocal Kathryn Ireland urged the moderator to "Move along. Or we'll lose the crowd!" If she only knew, I could have stayed all night.

Heading Home from the 4th...

Just heading home from 4th of July in the desert. Know what? It's hot there. Thanks to the 114° heat, the margaritas and a six year-old who thinks it's hysterical to stay up all night in a hotel room, I am totally wiped out. We had a blast, but right now all I can think about (besides sleep) are cool, white bedrooms. So, while I do this...

Palm Springs: The Off-Season

We're gearing up for the 4th of July here in Southern California. While most people are heading for the beach to escape the heat, we, along with 8 other families, are heading straight for the Sun. I somehow talked my Norwegian, heat-phobic husband into an off-season trip to Rancho Mirage/Palm Springs.

We bowed out of the same trip last summer, but felt compelled by our friends' stories of 5-star service, endless kid activities, and (mostly) super discounted rates. The resort is sending all kinds of perks our way! (No surprise). I think it's officially called The Suckers Package. The concierge with whom I've been working out the details has assured me though, that, in addition to two pools and a "lazy river," there are misters throughout the property. I should have left it at that, but I had to ask what the expected temperature is this weekend. Let's just say, if I want to save in restaurant bills, I can make grilled cheeses on the hood of my car.

Of course there is much stylishness to be had in the Desert. It's an architectural and design mecca. The only unfortunate part is the fam. Not in general. Geeze. Just in terms of the crimp they put in my vacay shopping and site seeing. I really hope I can at least peek over at Trina Turk. I'm crazy for her new home line! I'd also love to stop by the Viceroy. I've only seen the Santa Monica location in person. But I can already hear the "Why would we do that?" Oh well, the real point is to relax and spend time with my besties while we sip something poolside.

Gingham Couture

I just caught a lovely post on gingham at The Adventures of TartanScot. I immediately gushed to Scot about my longtime love of gingham. It's so summery, so fresh. It's at once uber preppy, yet country. Right now, it's even couture. Is there any fabric more all-American?

I just bought a heap of gingham shirts from JCrew. For summer entertaining, I keep piles of the cheap stuff in every color. It's less than $4/yd and makes any party so festive. I just pick my color to set the tone and whip out the pinking shears. My fav scheme is the cornflower blue with my blue/white Spode dishes and pink and orange garden roses. This first image, via Scot, will be forever filed in "favorites." Unfortunately, I can't see my husband agreeing to those hot yellow pants.

Of course, this inspired a fantasy shopping spree....

My New Second Home

My husband and I have created a very layered, eclectic, traditional home over the years. So, we've always said if we ever bought a vacation place, whether it be a beach house here in LA (close), a village cottage in Milwaukee (family), or a pied-à-terre in the NYC (love!), we would want it totally and completely modern. I have fantasy files filled with the rooms we'd create for this place.

But I take it all back! This is the fantasy second home of my dreams. I know, it is ultra traditional. I can just see myself serving mint juleps in a little shift dress. Okay, so Atlanta was never on the list. But he loves Southern cooking and I love to play pretend.

The Un-Staged Home

Earlier this summer I received a fantastic article written by Bunny Williams for William Sonoma Home's "To the Trade" series. It's all about Making A House A Home, something too many of us designers (and clients) tend forget.

Everything doesn't have to be hidden that is not entirely by design, or arranged for maximum impact. I'm all for the beauty of cool objects and the serenity of an orderly, well designed home. However, I love that she reminds us that, when arranging furniture, we should think first of maximizing easy conversation rather than style; that people should display the books they truly read rather than the pretty ones, and that it's okay to let newspapers and mail be seen, just not "left lying around willy-nilly." (Who but she could use the term "willy-nilly?")

I think this is why I tend to gravitate toward European home magazines. The rooms, even in all their glossiness, never look "staged," but rather like living, breathing, spaces occupied by living, breathing people. That's always more interesting to me. Like perfect people, perfect rooms, no matter how stylish, are totally boring.

Too blue, or not too blue

Ironically, this post was going to be about my break up with blue and white. I grew up in a blue and white house, ate off Blue Willow my whole childhood, even registered for everything blue and white some 16 years ago. We've all been served such a glut of this now totally cliché classic that I even steer clients away from it, imploring them to toss in some red, orange or apple green. But...

...going through old inspiration photos and cleaning out my garage this week, I'm like a girl trying to toss her wedding dress. There are just some things we will always hold dear as a part of ourselves.

How gorgeous was this HB cover? I just remembered, I have 5 yards of an Italian blue and white outdoor stripe. Not to mention a garage full of blue and white vases. Anyone? Quick, I've been know to change my mind.

What I'm Working On- Hollywood Bungalow

I loved the term "Global Regency" when I read it on Camila's post about melding these two styles. It is exactly what I'm constructing for my latest clients.

Remember they want "comfortable, casual with a little bit of Napa Style." The kitchen was already remodeled in contemporary Craftsman and there is brown wood panelling throughout the living areas. Both of these things dictate what will feel appropriate in the space.

She originally said she wanted a totally neutral scheme, greenery being the only color in the room, but she fell in love with the fabric at left. It's intensely bright in person. Somewhere between an acid apple and a malachite emerald. I thought it would be difficult to thread through the organic, neutral room (even though it's an ikat)--until I found this room from the DC Design House. Perfection. LOVE those super gloss green lampshades! The rest will be like icing the cake.

Here is my mood board for my clients' living room.

Here are some of the finishes and fabrics we were playing with in the studio.

The ikat (on my board) will be pillows. The velvet flocked trellis fabric (right) will be the drapes en lieu of the black ones in the inspiration room. (I know, I have a tiring thing for green trellis patterns. Ever since my neighbor's" garden room," as Mrs. Barbetti called it, back in the early 80's. I'd vie for sleepovers just to hang in that room. It even had the great pop of color from a bright red gumball machine. But I digress). So, What d'ya think? We'll add the 'Napa Style' they like with textual elements like fishermens' baskets and a bricklayers table. An unlikely mix for me, but I'm liking it!

My latest project is a home here in Los Angeles. I have to say, I was very surprised at how wrong I was at summing up this client. I'd like to think I can usually see their dream home in my head upon first meeting, right down to a penchant for Carrera vs. Soapstone. But this one caught me totally off guard.

This young, Ivy League/D.C. Debutante has somehow managed to find her way to the top of the Hollywood PR food chain. She's a super stylish Hollywood journalist, friends with celebrities too hip for me to even know. She's used to the red carpet treatment in the hottest new restaurants from the Beverly Hills to Vegas. I thought for sure this was going to be a very edgy, totally modern pad. I was already scouring 1stDibs for outrageous finds, laying out boards for a total entertainer's dream. Was this my chance to finally channel Tony Duquette--at least professionally?

Apparently not. At our first meeting, my stylish, painfully in-the-know client floored me with this revelation: "We want a really traditional, casual comfy home... Comfy and super cozy. Neutrals with a little bit of Napa style." Scratch, record screech. She later forwarded me pictures of interiors that reflected her beautiful, almost rustic taste. (See below) I sent her pictures of my own home, which reflects my own casual style of "family living." Hers will actually be a family home very soon. Yep, there is a baby on the way. (Yipee! Another nursery to design!)

I began scouring Malibu's Room at the Beach, Santa Monica's Rooms and Gardens and other places that embody what I affectionately call "Santa Barbara Style." So off we set, designing a home like Beth Rubino's set for "It's Complicated," complete with reclaimed wood tables, sisal rugs and cache pots for herbs. Need I mention she and her hubby truly cook. So there will actually be entertaining!

I'm really excited about this project. I'm off to find a bricklayer's table, some organic linens and a big comfy sofa!

Daily Designer Deal: Fabrics TDF

Gorgeous handblocked suzanis, ikats and kazak-inspired fabrics at Roberta Roller Rabbit. I'm happy to have some fresh, new patterns in this vein for those clients who don't have John Robshaw in their budget. Their prices are as great as their fabrics and furniture. Take a look at some of the offerings at RRR.

These first two are going to be the main fabrics for the Sherman Oaks nursery. (Yes, I'm doing a third nursery-- That's three in three months!)

I might be setting myself up by titling this post with "Daily." I plan to make this a regular feature here at MPS, but "Weekly" might be more realistic...Here's to ambition ;-)

Sunny with Patches of Blue Sky

This happy room, published by Martha Stewart Magazine, has me falling for yellow all over again. The muted coral throughout the space is the perfect shade to prevent a sunny palette from going too high key. The whole feeling is also kept cool with lots of white and splashes of blue, black and green. I love the easy eclecticism; like the Louis XV chair beside white lacquered nesting tables. Notice all the cheap chic details. Those are IKEA bookcases! She added radiator grills to the insides of the glass doors. (Home Depot and IKEA--doesn't get any cheaper than that!) Clever girl.

The wainscotting is actually balustrade. The lampshade detail--an easy DIY project.

Pink...

If all you've read of my blog is the title bar, you know my favorite color is PINK! Okay, it's actually my second favorite. Anyway, I was thrilled with the latest issue of House Beautiful; a tribute to the loveliest color of all. It inspired me to contact that prospective client for whom I've been envisioning a pink room. She's the only one with the guts. (Let's just let them all be flattered into submission by that statement :)

It also inspired me to post some of my favorite pink pics I've had filed away for years. I'll leave out my own pink office. You've seen enough of that--for now. I am currently refreshing it. Of course, I'm keeping the 80's pink chandelier, and the pink bookcases!

Unless it's in a young girl's room, I think pink should always be grounded with black, or especially, NAVY. It keeps it from feeling too frilly or feminine.

Do I even need to source this room? His name is practically printed all over the walls.

This is Betsey Johnson's NYC loft. Love her, love the space. I think this is how I like a pink room best; very eclectic, with lots of high contrast and bright artwork. Come to think of it, that's how I like any room.

Vanity Fit for a King

'Pretty' perfected. That's what I'd call these images from a gorgeous home in Greenwich, Connecticut. Juxtaposed this way, they really speak to me: silvery reflective surfaces, blue + white/beige with that kiss of pink, and De Gournay papers.

Okay, just as I was posting this, my client, to whom I forwarded the picture at upper right, phoned to weigh in on the vanity. I was giddy when I found it! Its lines are remarkably similar to a delicate Louis XVI style vanity she'd been considering in dark walnut. However, she thinks this more unique silver cased version is too formal for her taste. My heart is broken, but not discouraged. I think she's just reacting to the antique sconces. I shall keep you posted....

Mirrored Panels

Love, lust or just sort of ehh? Personally, I find them Greta Garbo glamourous. They can go Deco chic or Newport Cottage clean. (Yes, I know, most true Newport "cottages" were actually built during the Deco period). I just love the way they throw light (and glam) all around the room, any room. Thoughts?

Dreaming of a White Christmas...

I'm finding it impossible to conjure up any genuine Christmas spirit this year. This might have something to do with the fact that my house is filled with the essence of sunscreen and chlorine rather than pine and cinnamon. I'm a lifelong Californian, so Decembers filled with sunshine are my norm. However, I can't recall a single year when I actually broke a sweat trimming the tree while my kids splashed in the pool. I don't mean to rub road salt in the wounds of my Midwestern friends. (By the way, it's 83˚ here). I could honestly use a little winter right now! Wouldn't you know the year we decide to skip our Wisconsin trip to my husband's family, the Heat Miser decides to crash my Christmas. Maybe I'll throw the brood in the car for the 3 hour drive to the snow. Then again, a tan would really look great with my Christmas party dresses...

Dressmaker Details...

...make this the dressing room of my dreams. If Sea of Shoes bedroom and closet didn't have you swooning, check out Miles Redd's design for one lucky lady in Atlanta. And for the big and glossies, check out the revamped (thank you Stephen Drucker) Town and Country Magazine, beautiully photographed by Francesco Lagnese. Let's have a look...

Above, the owner's 11 year-old daughter primps in the dressing area. My own daughters would love to play dress-up in this room. Notice the regency style door panelling at left, the detail on the footstool and the simplicity of the toned down picture frames on the original fashion sketches.

Redd created a closet fit for Marie Antoinette, with custom pony skin carpet, hand painted de Gournay paper, and the faux bamboo moldings. See them? Easy to miss, but these are the details that make the magic.

Redd's beautiful living room keeps pace with the master suite. I love the abstract modernism of the painting at left in an otherwise classical, almost baroque room. Its warm colors, as well as those of the sofas and persimmon lamps, are the perfect counterpoint to the cool blue walls. Just beautiful, don't you think?

Serious (Monday morning) Inspiration

It's Monday. Always a bit draggy for me. But I had to share my delight. Thank you so much Decorista for passing on this absolute gem you aptly called "crazy cool." I love every inch! I want to live here, get dressed here, spend a day shopping for food and frocks with these girls, then bring it all home and entertain here! What a paradise. It's a happy home tour of Sea of Shoes' digs she shares with her blogging partner and mother in Dallas, TX. Her blog is filled with even more make-me gasp images and inspiration like I haven't had in months, maybe years. (By the way, she's not exactly a secret in the fashion world). What a great work of art (especially if you love elephants as much as I do)! Love that green velvet pillow; such an unusual shape. As is the large brass sphere lamp. So many interesting, yet simple, elements -- and they all add up to a strikingly fabulous room.

You know I don't normally care for a neutral palette (snooze), but I'm in love with the classic feel of these images. The black iron, natural elements of stone + pebbles, and the neutral fabrics. It all plays beautifully off the swaths of manicured greenery. What a great spot for a mellow Sunday brunch. Of course, I had to put a little outfit together. So in keeping with that mellow mood, I'll be toasting you all over eggs benedict (classic style) wearing this...

Frances Russell

This is embarrassingly long overdue! But I must send out the biggest thank you to one of my favorite bloggers and designers, Frances Russell, AKA, "M.A. the 2nd" of the unique and absolutely gorgeous blog, Beautiful Interiors of the 18th Century. Some while back she awarded my blog the Happy 101 award. I could not have been more flattered, especially since her blog is one of my favorites! It's the epitome of what I call "classic pretty."

She muses on the beautiful interiors of 18th Century France, in all its glory and elegance. As many of you know, I'm a huge francophile, but one needn't be to appreciate the refined beauty of her site, complete with magical snow! The whole thing has the feel of a winter's walk at Versailles. Stop by for your dose of roses, champagne and cupcakes.

The perfect patio?

I'm crazy for these pictures, and derailed yet again. Just when I thought I'd settled on the black and white cushions for my patio, I came across these images of a rooftop garden on an old brick building.

I love the feel of a true patio garden, with potting benches, antique linens and flea market finds.

Imagine sitting out here with friends eating artisan cheeses + figs, with lots of bread, chased down by Lillet on ice (my fav summer drink!). My husband would be opening bottles of red wine for everyone. I'll be wearing this little mini tunic dress....

and listening to this hauntingly beautiful Carla Bruni remake of the old song You Belong To Me. (It was her thumbing her nose at the critics as she and Sarkozy vacationed along the Nile.)

As afternoon turned to night, guitars would come out and we'd sit under the glow of that giant chandelier of candles.

On that note, I'm off to meet my date/hubby at our favorite village restaurant. Happy Weekend!

Color...

I know, we've all seen these by now, but I'm still swooning? I think after working on a very pale project for a client who prefers to be soothed and swaddled in pastels, these images were like chocolate mousse and foie gras after a long detox diet.

Walls clustered with art, heaps of books, pink chinoiserie,

and strong contrast and juxtaposition everywhere.

And I don't usually like purple, not even when you call it lavender.

These are rooms in which I could live quite happily,

'cuz I'd rather be stimulated than soothed any day.

The Great Outdoors

First off, I do apologize for the long hiatus! I have been a little MIA. I wish I could say it was basic summer laziness, but the truth is I've been busier than ever! However, this morning I spent sipping my tea and visiting some of my favorite girls. I'm recharged and very inspired.

After months of working on other peoples' places, I've finally started to address the outdoor areas of my own home. I know, it's mid-summer, but considering we entertain outside nearly all year here, It's never too late. This week I'll be sharing lots of thoughts on outdoor spaces.

I'm really loving the ethnic inspired, loungey boho chic feel. There are some great outdoor ikats around these days...

What I'm Working On: Blue Master Suite

Here's a peek at the master suite I'm working on. My client wants a soothing blue, spa-like space. Her own pair of coral silver prints served as inspiration for the motif and the color scheme. I thought we were on the same page, blues and whites with silver and crystal accents, until I mentioned layering in creams, textured natural fabric and golds to warm an otherwise dull and cold palette. While I personally don't care for mixing silver and gold on the body, I think it's a necessity in home decor. We dress every morning, but a home is supposed to feel layered and evolved over time. So far she's a bit resistant. So here's hoping my first mood board can help nudge her along. I know it's hard to see so tiny, so check out the photos below.

I'll use lots of antiqued mirror (hopefully framed in silvery gold). I love the idea of a little lucite end table in the sitting area. Any good resources?

Trims and fixtures with warm accents will give the room depth. Notice how the brass floor lamp mixes beautifully with sterling silver desk accessories.

My idea for the hallway leading to the master bath is mirrors inset in panel moulding. It will brighten the short dark hallway from the bedroom to the bath area. I especially love the warmth of the antique gold light fixtures, camel leather wing chair and the dark beige coral on the mantel.

For the bath area, I found this Thibaut paper which made me fall for coral motifs all over again. It is TDF in person. Aqua rice paper with hand blocked metallic coral in three shades of blue and silver. The silver picks up the veins of the carrera marble I'm using on the countertops.

While this photo doesn't necessarily reflect the style we're going after, it has the layered blue tones and gilded frames we'll use. I'll keep you all posted!

This color combo has been ubiquitous throughout history, as early and the Egyptian and Greeks. It was hugely popular in the 50's and 60's, when Breakfast at Tiffany's was made. Remember the scene where Patricia Neal's scandalous character phones her lover to say she won't be able to meet him as her husband mixes drinks in the foreground. As a young girl I got that this was sort of wrong, but I sure gave her points for her glamorous living room! Check out the white and gold painted credenza with greek key and grecian figures.

It's all the same palette as the Avalon bar and this outfit, which would also make for a fun night.

Navy is my black.

Anyone who knows me, knows I'm obsessed with navy blue. To me it exemplifies taste, restraint and refinement like nothing else. Plus, I look horrible in black. Navy is my black. It's also my white, my gray, my casual, my dressy, my pick-me-up, my calm-me-down... you get the idea. I suppose this near worship of navy began in grade school, when I was forced to wear an almost acidic, bright scarlet cardigan with my otherwise attactive uniform. I was painfully jealous of the upper grade girls, traipsing around in their navy blue sweaters, the inky blue hiding the cardigan's cheap acrylic.

(Excuse me while I sulk down bad memory lane.) I'll never forget sullenly driving to the uniform shop somewhere deep in the valley to pick out my new garb. I practically squealed with delight when I saw my new school's name perched atop a rack of nautically inspired uniforms, complete with middy blouses and red sailors' ties! My mom shot me a knowing smile that said, "See, this won't be so bad." I was trying not to let on just how pleased I was as we stood at the counter, my new look piled high. Then evil struck. The clerk informed us that the navy sweaters, and navy Friday service blazers, were for "upper grades only." Sigh, I thought. What will I have to wear, some babyish navy pullover? Suddenly, the woman returned with the most hideous red sweater ever weaved. It may have actually been molded. I'd been able to overlook the crunchy, scratchiness of my navy sweater. But somehow in the junior "scarlet" version the cardigan's plastic-ness was all the more apparent, even offensive. I winced, then felt a burning in my throat and the dreaded sting of tears filling my eyes. Honestly, this was the sweater I was being forced to wear for the next five years?? Wasn't it enough that I was being torn from all my public school friends and the second-grade boyfriend I swore I was meant to marry? Or that I had just been mercilessly teased with an ensemble that I was actually quite thrilled to don? This sweater not only ruined an otherwise perfect uniform, it ruined my chances of any real happiness, or of ever being warm (I'd rather freeze, thank you very much) for the next five years. So, I guess it's no wonder wearing navy makes me feel the way it does. Like the day I hit 7th grade, I put it on and I feel warm, cool and happy all at once. It definitely made me smile. I'm absolutely crazy for this soon to be fabric by LuluDK. She is in the process of having it printed. I reminds me so much of Matisse's Paper Cut-out series, which I've adored since I was a little girl. There's a reason they called him "The Happy Painter." I hung the posters from the Icarus series in my preteen bedroom and thought they looked so smart with with my bold Marimekko bedding. Brights on white. Yum. I can't wait to get my hands on this fabric!!

Pink flowers on pale blue

I'm currently working on a project steeped in pale blues. While recently combing through my books for inspiration photos, I realized the rooms that really jump out at me always had a spot of pink, usually in the form of a bouquet of flowers. Put you finger over the flowers in these rooms and you'll see the happiness just drains from the picture.

I have always loved this combination of soft blue and pale pink. Especially, as I'm trying to convince my client, when it's sprinkled with bits of gold!
