Red Uprising

In design school, while studying color theory, we also learned about the so-called psychology of color. One day, while discussing this, our teacher explained all the personality types associated with each color. He then asked us to raise our hands as he went through the colors. "How many of you are Blues?" I, of course, raised my hand. My teacher gave me a look of such horror and disbelief you would've thought I was a mutt traipsing through the kitchen with something half-live between my jaws. "You are so not a Blue," he bellowed.

"Excuse me," I said. "My whole house is blue. My entire bedroom and all my dishes are blue. I'm wearing a blue blazer for God's sake!"

"Yes," he said, "but with a hot pink scarf. Only a Red would do that." I couldn't help but feel offended. I felt loyal, classic, trustworthy. I felt Blue. I always suspected he never really liked me. He even hammered it home, practically calling me out with, "Everything about you screams red." I would've really let him have it, had I not been such a Blue.

He insisted that if I went home and looked through my house and wardrobe I would see that I was, in fact, using blue as a background for all my redness. While I still feel like a blue trapped in a red's psyche, I can now admit what I failed to report back to him: Indeed, my blue rooms were filled with red lamp shades, red Persian rugs, red pillows, hot pink floral arrangements, and mostly red and orange oil paintings. All, as he said, against a blue and beige "backdrop."

Now fashion editors everywhere are hailing the "Spread of Red." I'm a bit surprised because, clearly, red is polarizing. People do seem to love it, hate it, or in some cases, hate loving it. Funny thing is, since this incident so many years ago, I often stop and smile when I catch myself reaching for something in red, or look down at my passengers seat and realize I have subconsciously surrounded myself with (seriously): a red wallet, red key chain, red handbag, and red leather file folder. I didn't buy these things all at once, nor did I think to coordinate any of them. So imagine my surprise to see them all together on the seat of my car; the seat of a car which I'd fantasized about buying...in red. But only an intense, unpredictable, aggressive kind of girl would buy a car like that! And I am so not a Red.

 How about you?

Blush + Gray

It's a cold and rainy day in Southern California. (Seriously--it was 43º this morning!) I'm loving the combination of my soft pink Valentine's bouquet against the gray skies outside my window. So moody and romantic.

Stay warm, Angelinos!

Ballet in My Inbox

American Ballet Theatre has announced its 2012 season beginning this month in Dallas
Performances in NYC begin May 14, at The Met

This has me idly day-dreaming at my desk. I lingered over the ABT season schedule the way I wistfully browse estate home catalogues. How I'd love to secure that NYC pied à terre by May so my friends and I could gather there for dinner and drinks before stepping into the warm Spring night and heading to the ballet. My dream montage looks something like this...

It starts here in my fabulous apartment (I know, it's one of your favorites, too!)....

I'd serve cocktails from this pretty little bar....

then the girls and I would walk back through these doors
(Can't ever get enough of these, can we?)...

to powder our noses and gloss our lips in here...

before heading for the Met to see Swan Lake, wearing a little something
I put together when I should have been reorganizing purchase orders...

Oh, and my daughter, the ballerina, would be dancing the role of Odette.

Okay, back to the Friday workload...

Have a dreamy weekend!

Hello Weekend!

Really looking forward to some downtime this weekend. Besides the kids' games, I have no plans other than to watch those overdue movie rentals (yes, I still physically 'rent' them) and eat eggs benedict with a side of sausage. Maybe I should throw a workout in there.

I'd love to sit around and read the papers in here.

And when my husband offers to take his tired wife out for brunch, I'll be ready in this.

Have a nice, relaxing weekend!

Emeralds and Black Leather

We've seen so much emerald green this year, and I couldn't be happier. No color is more uplifting or optimistic than this color of renewal, fertility and youth. It's the reason I love visiting Wisconsin in the Spring. The landscape is that intense, lush green of Ireland. (Of course, they've earned it after those winters!) I especially love emerald green with black and gold. Classic, crisp and just plain gorgeous.
I'm happy that it's still going strong on the runway this fall. You know I'm already Fantasy Shopping. Have a look at the things I've found, like this regal Versace military coat (a steal at $4,675) and emerald ring, which I'd pair with leather leggings and Valentino studded booties. (A lady with an edge.) The python clutch with gold coral clasp is the piece de resistance! Forget Missoni for Target. This is what I'm buying this week! In my dreams and on my blog.

Here are some spaces along the same lines. Love the way Europeans mix periods and styles with total nonchalance. Notice the Victorian ceiling above a very modern fixture and furnishings.

What can I say. I can't stop staring at this image above. Timeless. Who can guess what decade this is from? Bet you're wrong. Bet I'm wrong; I don't actually know. There are hints of the last five...and I'm still trying to source that fixture. Anyone?

A lovely vignette from Cristi Holcombe!

GORGEOUS! Though it wouldn't really work at the kids' hockey games. Unless! I wear that Versace coat!

This color combo even works well in bathrooms, where it goes from sexy glam to clean and fresh.

I love the way Miles Redd layered emerald paintings over the emerald walls. And speaking of paintings, here's one from my gallery, Green Elephant Studios, by a mixed media artist (paint, ink and tape - 19x19) {email me for purchase info}

Emerald leather works, too. Is this delicious or what! {email me for purchase info, Honey, 'cuz our anniversary's coming up and I'm just trying to help you out.}

White Out

Labor Day is fast approaching and while I welcome the start of the school year with open arms and a big fat kiss, I'm a little less enthusiastic about shelving all my white pants. I absolutely love white pants, almost as much as I love navy (don't even get me started on the two together!). Even though temperatures remain in the high 80s through early fall here, I'm an old-fashioned girl: No phone calls after 9:00 and no white after Labor Day. So, it is with great sadness I say goodbye, until next spring. Cue music...

Gingham Couture

I just caught a lovely post on gingham at The Adventures of TartanScot. I immediately gushed to Scot about my longtime love of gingham. It's so summery, so fresh. It's at once uber preppy, yet country. Right now, it's even couture. Is there any fabric more all-American?

I just bought a heap of gingham shirts from JCrew. For summer entertaining, I keep piles of the cheap stuff in every color. It's less than $4/yd and makes any party so festive. I just pick my color to set the tone and whip out the pinking shears. My fav scheme is the cornflower blue with my blue/white Spode dishes and pink and orange garden roses. This first image, via Scot, will be forever filed in "favorites." Unfortunately, I can't see my husband agreeing to those hot yellow pants.

Of course, this inspired a  fantasy shopping spree....
